When I was a little boy back home in Savannah there were stores that I visited regularly for my weekly quota of comic books. On nearby racks were the men's magazines of the time. Unlike today's Maxim and Stuff, True Adventure and kin offered outrageous stories of purported heroic and terrifying struggles not to mention the sex lives of the inhabitants of the Kremlin.
A popular theme of the time was Nazis torturing women. Often the Nazis were replaced with Cuban commie sadists. Cubans were scary bogeymen of the time. (I remember doing a practice march from school to a train station preparing for nuclear missile attack based in Cuba.)
This painting (perhaps by Norman Saunders) was the cover art of one of those magazines (sans logo and story titles).
