A.E. Van Vogt was one of the science fiction writers who worked for John W. Campbell. Van Vogt's master formula consisted of having a plot jump every eight hundred words.
There's no reason to think he had anything to do with the cover art. Or that the art reflects the contents. I do remember his silliest novel ended with the aliens giving up on doing anything on the planet earth. Their reason? They couldn't understand women.
