The accompanying text tells how Nick Dickson, a self-made entrepreneur, is enraged by his diffident girlfriend Lisa's failure to apply for a promotion for which she is eminently qualified. Under the terms of their relationship, she must submit to his punishment between two lighted candles. If either of them chooses to extinguish the candles, they will split up. Thanks for re-presenting this classic sequence, some portions of which were making the rounds on the internet in the late 90's or so. It has a great-looking model but is marred by two things: the use of the martinette instead of a paddle or cane, and the common failing of Janus's photography, namely having the best-composed photos in black & white rather than the more erotic color.

The top photo is number 23 in a superb sequence of 53 that illustrated the story "Ritual Of Conjunction" in Janus 92 (1992), pp. 4-20, 25, 28, 29. Unusually in my experience, text and images are perfectly coordinated, to the extent that the exposition is pretty much redundant.

The cover art pertains not to Maria Monk - who nonetheless experiences her own share of birching - but to the companion piece bound in the same edition (published by Luxor Press in 1971), The Cadiere Case Involving Father Jean-Baptise Girard. This was an authentic Catholic scandal from France in 1730, when a young woman called Marie-Catherine Cadi�re accused the Jesuit priest Father Girard of bewitching, flagellating and molesting her. The story is ill-served by English-language websites. The fullest account known to me is in Rossell Hope Robbin's 1959 Encyclopedia Of Witchcraft And Demonology: entry "Cadi�re, Catherine", pp. 69-74. This includes three illustrations taken from a contemporary French report of the affair, the third of which is the above. The original caption runs, "Sometimes he gave me blows with a whip, and then he kissed the spot where he had beaten me."

Obey was launched in the 1990s as an M/F corporal punishment magazine. Some later issues such as this one ran F/F photo stories, presumably in the hope of broadening appeal and boosting circulation. It didn't work; publication ceased after 14 issues.

Are these books all text or do they have photos? The logo illustration is probably by Eric Stanton. Publisher is Reuben Sturman's World-Wide News Corporation (WWNC). Sturman founded Eros Golstripe Publishing in 1971 (with Leonard Burtman) and put out dozens of fetish mags: Corporal, Unique World, High Heels, etc.
